U17s Post Strong Third-Place Finish at Potomac Challenge Cup

NYS U17 All-Star Wrapup

Pittsburgh, PA – The NYS Rugby Conference Boys U17 All-Stars took third place at the Potomac Challenge Cup Tournament held at Founders Field in Pittsburgh, PA.

On a brutally hot day, the NYS U17’s opened the day with a solid 29-0 victory over Ohio South U17. Paced by two tries from Okoya Anderson, one apiece from Alex Fumerelle, Dillon Lucas and Max Klotz and Colin Deguehery’s penalty kick and three conversions, NYS was never threatened.

Up next was Eastern Penn Rugby Union in one of the most exciting matches of the tournament. Tied at 5 with a try from eightman Jordan Ghyzel, NYS took a late 10-5 lead on Anderson’s third try of the tournament. With no time showing on the clock, NYS forced a turnover and sent a kick into touch for what they thought would be fulltime, but the referee continued the match for another three minutes despite multiple situations where he should have called fulltime. The extra time would come back to bite NYS as a defensive lapse allowed the EPRU wing to outrace the cover defense to knot the match at 10.

The referee informed both teams that the conversion would be the fulltime mark and both sides held their breath as the conversion looked to be on the money. EPRU was already running out to the middle of the field celebrating when the kick bounced off the crossbar and fell harmlessly back onto the field of play. Deadlocked at 10-10 and the teams would go to a 5 minute sudden death overtime.

In the overtime NYS was on the move but an errant pass was combined with a few missed tackles and just like that, EPRU had escaped with a 15-10 win. Despite the tough loss, the team was upbeat knowing that they had played one of the tournament favorites to a standstill at the end of regulation and were looking forward to Sunday’s 3rd place match.

NYS took the pitch on Sunday to face North Carolina for 3rd place focused and committed to playing according to the plan laid out by coach Clarence Picard. Quick rucks, push the pace and stay ahead of the gain line was the order of the day and the plan paid immediate benefits when NC was called for not releasing. Deguehery calmly slotted the kick to give NYS a 3-0 lead barely 3 minutes in. Center Evan Meister notched his first of the tournament as he finished off a long passing movement, outracing the NC wing to the try zone. Deguehery added the conversion to give NYS a 10-0 lead at the half.

Despite the low point total, NYS was rarely threatened in the half as they kept NC beyond their 22 meter line the entire half. Early in the second stanza, fly half Klotz put up a beautiful high ball on a free kick. Meister timed his hit perfectly and leveled the NC fullback, stripped him of the ball and ran down to within 10m of the try line. Two strong rucks later, flanker John Sullivan slipped thru a gap in the NC defense for the try.

Up 15-0, the closing minutes were all NYS. With two NC defenders closing fast, Deguehery calmly fielded a high kick and set a ruck. Sullivan advanced on a pick and go and was followed in suit by Anderson who found the try zone for his team leading fourth try of the tournament. Deguehery converted for the final margin of 22-0 and 1 3rd place finish.

Center Evan Meister was named to the All-Tournament team by the coaching staff. “Just a great effort by all the guys” said U17 Head Coach Clarence Picard. “The guys really came together as a team this weekend, and it showed with our performance against North Carolina”.

The NYS U17 All-Stars will practice this Sunday in preparation for a match against Consett (UK) RFC July 7th in Rochester NY.
